A guide who is yours
The gap between a good guide and an excellent one is wider than the gap between a good camp and an excellent one — and cheaper to close.
Three levels, often confused

Most people who say they want "a private safari" mean the middle row. The third is a different thing.
What a private guide changes
Continuity, mainly. A camp guide meets you at six on the first morning knowing nothing about you and has three days to work it out. A private guide spends the first day learning what you actually want, and every day after that delivering it.
In practice that means: no more polite stops at impala when you are hunting for cats; knowing that you want the light more than the tick; recognising on day four that you would rather have one long morning than two short ones.
It also means someone who is yours on the logistics — who handles the airstrip, the delayed connection, the camp that has put you in the wrong tent.
What it costs
- A daily rate for the guide, quoted per day rather than per person
- Their flights between parks
- Their accommodation, usually at a reduced guide rate the camps offer
- Sometimes a vehicle, if the guide travels with their own rather than using the camp’s
Because it is priced per day rather than per person, it gets better value as your party grows — the same logic as exclusive use.
When it is worth it
- Photography. By far the strongest case. Light, position and patience are everything, and a guide who understands that is transformative.
- A multi-park trip. The continuity across moves is where it earns out.
- Second or third visits. You know what you want; a stranger each morning slows you down.
- Families. A guide who knows your children by name changes a week enormously.
When it is not: a single three-night Mara stay at a small camp with a good resident guide. There you are paying for continuity you do not have time to use.
